Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the United States. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency provides videos, commentaries and analysis of portrayals in popular cultures. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in popular culture narratives. In her efforts to break down stereotypes of women that exist in pop media, she is also working with issues that relate to the harassing women targeted by the media and others on the internet. Holding a master's degree in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaker and she has delivered talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Interested in issues concerning gender identities and feminisms from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while she was still at university. A woman with ambitions to start a web-series examining the gender representation of video games was targeted by the internet campaign. However the attack could be a deterrent, but it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. Many awards have been presented to her for all the contributions that she contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency. This educational nonprofit explores women's representations within the popular culture stories.
