Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She grew up with her mom's family. She claimed that the color of her skin was a reason for her feeling at odds with her peers as an infant. The family was struggling financially and had to relocate sixteen times in order to take on her father's work. Despite this adversity, Russell mentioned how in her early years "there always was a chance for re-invention, to make something new."As growing up, Russell was already artistically inclined, at first, she would like to pursue a career in ballet, and later become a painter. At eighteen, she took her first acting class and finally found her place. She took money from her work to buy a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work when her cash ran out and then resume auditioning again. The routine continued for four years, until she was offered her first television part.
